Recent studies have highlighted racial biases in speech recognition systems developed by major tech companies. These systems, including those from Amazon, Apple, Google, IBM, and Microsoft, exhibit significant disparities in accuracy between Black and white speakers.
On average, they are twice as likely to incorrectly transcribe audio from Black speakers compared to white speakers. This issue is not only a matter of social injustice but also impacts critical aspects of people’s lives, such as immigration decisions, job hiring, and transportation. Companies should address this bias to ensure fair and equitable access to voice recognition technology. source
