Which Immigrants Have It Worse in America?

Immigrants of different backgrounds may face different challenges in the United States, including discrimination, economic struggles, and language barriers:

Black immigrants

38% of Black immigrants report worse treatment by police, 35% by store or restaurant staff, and 26% when buying or renting a home. They are also more likely to be told to "go back to where you came from" than other immigrant groups.

Hispanic immigrants

Hispanic immigrants are more likely to have lower incomes, limited English proficiency, and lack health insurance. They are also more likely to have trouble paying for basic needs, such as food, housing, and utilities.

Asian immigrants

40% of Asian immigrants report worse treatment than U.S.-born people in certain situations, and 40% of employed Asian immigrants report workplace mistreatment. Asian immigrants with limited English proficiency may also face language barriers.

European Immigrants

The treatment of European immigrants compared to immigrants of color can vary significantly based on the country and specific context. Generally, several factors influence the experiences of immigrants, including race, ethnicity, language, and cultural differences.

Public Perception and Media Representation:

Media portrayals and public perceptions can influence how immigrants are treated. Immigrants of color are sometimes depicted negatively, which can exacerbate discrimination and bias.

European immigrants might be perceived more positively, especially if they are seen as contributing to the economy or having desirable skills.

Overall, while both European immigrants and immigrants of color face challenges, the latter often encounter more systemic barriers and discrimination. The experiences of individual immigrants can vary widely based on numerous factors, including their specific background, the country they immigrate to, and the prevailing social and political climate.
